Noted For: militant Islamic leader; fought the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan (1979-89), founded the al Qaeda terrorist organisation (1989), organized the killing of American troops in Somalia (1993), supported the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan (1996), issued a proclamation calling for the death of all Americans (1998), placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list (1999). Bin Laden and al Qaeda became the target of U.S. and allied military operations following the World Trade Center bombing in 2001. Some sources give his DOB as 7/30/1957.
